Zearing, Iowa 1956 History

Zearing had a very successful boy scout organization from 1919 to 1926. Harry Wolford was the scoutmaster for almost six years during that period.

Scouting was first discussed in Zearing in 1918. Finally Julius Ray Tisdale enrolled Zearing's first scouts. They were few in number. Not enough for a full troop. After Ray had been the scoutmaster for more than a year, he resigned.

Lloyd E. Beach and Lloyd Craft then prevailed upon Harry Wolford to become scoutmaster. In the summer of 1920 the membership started to increase. By 1922 there were enough scouts to form Troop 2. Alvin L. Vandermast became the scoutmaster of Troop 2 in November, 1922. On March 29, 1923, there were thirty-five scouts on the roll call. In May, 1923, Lloyd E. Beach and Lloyd Craft became assistant scoutmasters of Troop 2.

In 1922, August Louis Grimm, chairman of the local boy scout court of honor, and five scouts camped at the Iowa State Fair for a week. The scouts were Lloyd Craft, Russell Haase, Meriden L. Rankin, Paul F. Talmadge, and Donald H. Grimm. The scouts ushered in the grandstand during that time. All were given official passes to the fair.

In June of 1923, nineteen scouts attended Camp Kooroq which was located near the Des Moines river, south of Boone, Iowa. The following scouts spent a week at Camp Kooroq:

On March 13, 1925, a boy scout circus was held. Admission was 13 cents for adults with an extra charge for side shows. Condit Bowie and his clown band furnished the music.

Several scouts advanced to the highest rank in scouting and others came close. Local camping trips were frequently scheduled. Illinois Grove, Point Pleasant, Soper's Mill, and Eldora were chosen as the sites for the Zearing scout camps.
