Marshall county attorney, in prosecuting the case. The defense was handled by H. M. Funson.
The trial was held before Edgar D. Reed, justice of the peace, Liberty township, Marshall county, Iowa. There were seventeen witnesses for the defense and the same number for the prosecution. Justice Reed finally decided on a verdict of not guilty.
The following story was taken from the November 15, 1906, issue of The Zearing Weekly News. George D. Brown was the publisher.
“On November 13, 1906, a corn husking contest between John R. Golly and Ernest L. Perry was held on the R. B. (Bert) Craft farm southeast of Zearing. A more ideal day could not have been chosen for the contest. The rows were eighty rods long. Several times the boys busked two rows in twenty-eight minutes.
“During the forenoon there was not much excitement in the community. However, in the afternoon the phones were kept busy in all directions. The telephone office had more inquiries than they could handle.
“At the end of 8 hours and 45 minutes, John R. Golly had 165 bushels and 35 pounds. Ernest L. Perry had 169 bushels and 60
