the south side of Main Street, midway between Pearl Street and Center Street. The Pollock Block was built in 1902 by Robert R. Pollock, Zearing merchant.
Chris G. Muschick owned the building at the time of the fire. It housed the Towle Plumbing & Heating Company.
Other buildings in the vicinity were saved by the hard working fire departments of Zearing, Colo, Nevada, McCallsburg, Hubbard, and Roland.
On April 8, 1955, a fire destroyed the barn on the W. Everett Wickham farm northeast of Zearing. The building literally burst into flames. There was no chance to save it after the fire department arrived.
The Crucible, dated January 16, 1886, carried an item which stated that there had been a jam of teams on Main Street on the preceding Wednesday. One could not drive in any direction, according to The Crucible.
The Story City Branch railroad sponsored an excursion to Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1901.
Walter D. Hix was the first man in Zearing to own an automobile. This information was furnished by Florence Hix Lightfoot. Walter bought a Cadillac in 1903.
Council meeting, July 6, 1908—Moved by William C. Young that fifty hitching posts be purchased by the town and placed on Main Street and side streets. Motion carried.
The first serious accident in Lincoln township involving an automobile happened in 1915. A Ford car driven by Robert Gildner was wrecked. Ralph Norton riding with Gildner was seriously injured. We found no record of an earlier serious accident.
