Candy is about the only thing we can not get. Chewing tobacco is about 7 cents a plug and smoking is about 8 cents a can.
A shell went into the ground under me and exploded. There was an awful feeling from the shock and the worst taste I ever had in my mouth. A big chunk of shrapnel had gone clear through my right thigh, hitting the bone on the way through. About midnight the litter carriers got me and carried me to the field hospital.
I saw Ray Tisdale the first part of the week and he was wondering if he would be lucky enough to get the flu. I told him old tough fellows from Iowa, especially those from Story county, around Zearing, would not take it.
I am well except for one thing. I have the prickly heat so bad that I feel like I am full of cooties.
I have been quite busy, putting in most of my spare time on books. I want to keep at the head of my class.
Next came Ohio and I fell in love with that state. The prettiest girls that I saw on the whole trip. And they are patriotic too.
