There was an honor roll and a service flag for the men of World War I. I could not find the service flag. The list of names for the honor roll is also missing.
According to The Tri County News, the service flag was dedicated on April 26, 1918. It was a huge flag with twenty-one stars at the time of the dedication. Each star represented a local young man in the service. The flag was made by the ladies of the Red Cross.
George W. Phillips read the list of names at the dedication. The high school cornet band furnished the music. Professor Pollard of Ames led the community singing. Professor L. B. Schmidt of Ames gave the dedication address. Civil War veterans sat on the platform with the officials.
It is difficult to establish any specific rules for an honor roll compiled so many years after the end of a war. So the only rule used is an abstract one. Could the soldier's name be immediately associated with Zearing, Iowa.
