John was wounded in action at Kelly's Ford, Tennessee. A musket ball hit his arm below the elbow. He fought in the battle of Nashville, Tennessee. John campaigned in Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
There is no official record of the date of death or the burial place of John F. Oldenburg. He died suddenly in a hotel dining room at Goldfield, Iowa. The evidence seems to indicate that he died in 1900.
