GOEHRING, CHRISTIAN—Co. I, 55th Illinois Infantry

The name is spelled Gohring on some of his records. Christian enlisted on August 27, 1861. He received a disability discharge on August 21, 1862, at St. Louis, Missouri.

Christian was in the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. He was a bugler with General Grant's army.

Hamilton, MONTGOMERY—Co. C, 146th Illinois Infantry

Montgomery enlisted on August 30, 1864. He was discharged on June 12, 1865, at Cairo, Illinois.

The 146th was organized at Camp Butler and mustered in for one year. Montgomery's company was assigned to duty at Brighton, Illinois, guarding drafted men. It seems that there was so much opposition to drafting men during the Civil War that enlisted men had to be assigned to guard the draftees.

The name is spellcd Hare on Post 239 records. It was spelled Harre on some of the Civil War records. The family spelled the name Herr.

Jacob enlisted on February 23, 1864. He was discharged on July 12, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky.

Jacob fought in the battles of Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia. He marched to the sea with Sherman's army. Jacob marched in the Grand Review, May 24, 1865, at Washington, D.C.
