A memorial shaft was completed by Zearing Post 116 in the Zearing Cemetery on May 28, 1935. The shaft was 5 feet tall and 12 inches square. Emblems of the Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War I were placed on the shaft.
Lyle C. Bailey donated the materials for the shaft. Leon Deal, Harry M. Meekins, Lyle C. Bailey, Nels M. Hansen, and Christy M. Read built it.
In May, 1956, a committee from Post 116 placed emblems of the Mexican War, World War II, and the Korean War on the shaft. Members of the committee were Adrian J. Conrad, Lee G. Meredith, Franklin Dale Johnston, and Donald H. Grimm.
