Zearing, Iowa 1956 History

Eugene and Sarah were the parents of a daughter, Rosa. Rosa Stebbins Newby was living in Roseville, California, in 1955.

Sarah died on February 26, 1879. She was born on August 18, 1855. Sarah is buried in the Illinois Grove Cemetery.

STEVENS :

Minnie Webb Stevens is a resident of Nevada, Iowa, in 1956. Minnie's help in gathering information for this history was greatly appreciated. Minnie is a member of the pioneer Webb family of Sherman township, Story county, Iowa.

Charles W. Stevens was born in Story County, Iowa, on March 28, 1875. Charles married Minnie Webb on March 1, 1900. They moved to our community after the marriage.

Charles and Minnie were active in the Christian Church of Zearing. They were well known residents of our community.

Charles died on June 14, 1946. Minnie is living at Nevada, Iowa, in 1956.

Stimson :

The name Stimson appears many times in the records of the town of Zearing. Nathaniel A. Stimson was a town official.

Nathaniel A. Stimson was born on March 11, 1867, at Tiskilwa, Illinois. Mary Elizabeth See was born on November 3, 1871, in Sherman township, Story county, Iowa. Nathaniel and Mary were married at the See home in Sherman township on January 1, 1890. They moved to Zearing, Iowa, in 1892.

Nathaniel and Mary were the parents of three children. They were Mary Goldie Stimson Abbott—1892 ; Mervin H. Stimson—1895 ; and Laverne E. Stimson—1903. Goldie, who lives at San Francisco, California, furnished the family information for this history.

According to Virgil Lancaster, the name Zearing Road, was suggested by Nathaniel A. Stimson for one of the main roads in their section of California. The name was adopted by the authorities at his suggestion. The Zearing Road runs through Denair, California. Nathaniel A. Stimson, John R. Chance, and Aaron Lancaster, all former Zearing families, lived along the road.

Nathaniel died on February 21, 1940. Mary died on July 12, 1948. They are buried at Turlock, California.

Francis Tagatoff was mentioned in Allen's history of Story county as a prominent resident of Lincoln township in the 1880's.
