Zearing, Iowa 1956 History

Harley died on November 8, 1946. Maggie is living in Zearing, Iowa, in 1955.

ROBERTS :

The Roberts family can be listed with the first settlers of the Illinois Grove neighborhood. The first member of the James Roberts family to settle in Zearing came in 1893. He was George B. For many years members of the Roberts family owned and operated a meat market in Zearing.

Adam James Roberts was born in Marion, Ohio, on February 23, 1841. He came to Illinois Grove with his parents in 1855. James married Mary Graham of Tipton, Iowa, in the 1860's.

James and Mary were the parents of eight children. They were Josie, George B., Abbey D., Harry L., May, Quincy, Dot, and Lucian.

James died on September 16, 1926. Mary died in 1916.

Robinson :

Robinson is another name that needs no introduction in our community. Dr. Catherine, Genevieve Robinson Thornton, and Monica Robinson Varnum are well known residents of our community in 1956.

George Robinson was born near Quebec, Canada, on March 2, 1861. He came to the United States in 1872. George settled near State Center, Iowa. Later he moved his family to a farm southeast of Zearing. George married Mabel Learned on February 26, 1889.

George and Mabel were the parents of nine children. They were Aganes, Catherine, Laurence, James, Winifred, Monica, Genevieve, George, and Marcella.

George died on October 5, 1906. Mabel died on March 26, 1950.

ROGERS :

There were two John Rogers families living in our community prior to 1910. John Rogers, the blacksmith, was a charter member of Zearing, Iowa. He came to the new town in 1881. The other John Rogers was a farmer who moved to our community in 1893.

John P. Rogers Sr. married Anna Humphrey at Colo, Iowa, on November 21, 1880. John P. was Zearing's first blacksmith.

John P. and Anna were the parents of two children. They were Fred W. and Nellie. John P. Sr. had a son, John P. Jr., and a daughter, Jessie, at the time of his marriage to Anna.

John P. Sr. died in May, 1902. Anna died on November 14, 1923.

We have very little information about John Rogers, the farmer. His wife, Susannah Myers, was born on December 4, 1845, near Lancaster, Ohio.
