GATES :

Norman J. Gates was a local Civil War veteran. The family lived in our community several years.

Norman J. Gates was born in 1845. We do not have the place of birth. However, Norman was a resident of Illinois when he entered the service during the Civil War. Marrilla Jane Gates was born on May 20, 1850, in Stephenson county, Illinois. We are not certain if the obituary meant to imply that her maiden name was Gates. Norman and Marrilla were married in Stephenson county, Illinois, in 1868.

Norman and Marrilla were the parents of eight children. We have the names of five of the children. They were Mary, Sadie, Fred, Earl, and Martin.

Norman died in 1903. Marrilla died on April 21, 1931.

GOEHRING :

The name listed on the local G.A.R. records is Christian Goehring. You will note that there was much disagreement in regard to the spelling of the name. He signed his name as Chritian Goehring, according to his granddaughter, Mrs. Roy Pevehouse of Union, Iowa.

Chritian Goehring, 1834-1899, was born in Hesse, Germany. He was a cabinet maker, mechanic, and farmer. He came to the United States in 1850. Chritian was married in Buffalo, New York, to Regina Fredericka Straub, 1833-1918. She was born in Wurttemberg, Germany.

ARMY RECORDS : The records of this office show that one Chritian Gohring, surname also found as Ghoring but not as Goehring, age twenty-eight years, born in Germany, and by occupation a mechanic, was enrolled in the Army on August 27, 1861, at Morris, Illinois.

Chritian and Regina Fredericka are buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Omaha, Nebraska.
