relative of the brothers. Descendants state that Zakariah was either a second or third cousin of Jonathan and Thomas P.

Zakariah Chance was born on July 28, 1831. His wife, Amy, was born on May 29, 1839. Zakariah and Amy moved to the town of Illinois Grove, Iowa, in the late sixties or early seventies. We do not have the exact date. They moved to Ames, Iowa, from Illinois Grove.

Zakariah and Amy were the parents of three children. They were Edgar, Sumner, and Ella. Sumner and Ella Chance Ufford lived in our community. However, Edgar and his wife, Myrtle Vanpatter Chance, established a permanent home in this community. They moved to Lincoln township in 1895 from Ames.

Edgar and Myrtle were the parents of five sons. They were Emmett, Howard, Donald, Marion C., and Eldon.

Zakariah died on November 12, 1901. Amy died on July 15, 1914.

Chandler :

Hartwell P. Chandler Sr. was a well known barber in Story county, Iowa, in the early 1900's. Chan, as he was called by his friends, had a well equipped barber shop in Zearing. The Zearing Enterprise on June 30, 1905, stated that Chan had the only bath room in Zearing. The following is a Chan advertisement :

If you want a pretty face
Just step into Chandler's place.
He will fix you up so nice
You will never mind the price.

Hartwell P. Chandler Sr. was born in Ohio on February 7, 1852. He was a small boy when he came to Hardin county, Iowa, with his parents. Lucy Grout was born in Johnson county, Iowa, in 1854. Hartwell Sr. and Lucy were married in Hardin county.

Hartwell Sr. and Lucy were the parents of nine children. Three died in infancy. The others were Edith, Jesse, Margaret, Daisy, Hartwell Jr., and Carl. Hartwell Jr. is living in Zearing in 1956.

Hartwell Sr. married Hulda Marie Coulter Davis on April 28, 1901, at Story City, Iowa. Hulda Marie is listed under the name, Davis, in this history.

Hartwell Sr. died on December 2, 1925. Lucy died in Colorado. She is buried in a cemetery located near Pikes Peak.

CLEMONS :

The Clemons family lived in our community in the early 1900's. William H. Clemons served the town of Zearing as a town clerk for several years.

William H. Clemons was born at Clemons, Iowa. Mary F. Waldie was born at Oregon, Illinois, on August 19, 1868. William and Mary were married on August 15, 1886.
