ner Bolton, the daughter of David Tanner, at Mount Vernon in 1867. They moved to our community in the fall of 1880.
Martin and Hannah were the parents of four children. They were Fred, Edna, Albert, and Milton.
Martin died on April 11, 1921. A veteran of the Civil War, Martin was buried in the Soldiers Home Cemetery at Marshalltown, Iowa. We do not have the date of Hannah's death.
Bunker :
At about 2:30 p. m. on Monday, December 5, 1887, the people of Zearing, Iowa, were startled by a loud explosion. The boiler in the engine room at the Abbott grain elevator had exploded. A large section of the boiler was hurled north to the north side of Main Street between Center Street and Pine Street.
Adam K. Guthrie and Joseph M. Bunker were tying their horses to a hitching post at the time of the explosion. The section of the boiler struck Joseph M. Bunker and he was instantly killed. It also killed one of the horses. The air was filled with bricks, mortar, and pieces of boards. Some of the debris fell several blocks away. Luckily Adam K. Guthrie was not injured.
Joseph M. Bunker had lived in Lincoln township for about ten years. He was a man who had many friends. Joseph was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Zearing.
We do not know where Joseph M. Bunker was born, As a matter of fact we do not have very much personal information about him.
We know that he married Lucinda Bowen Huling. Lucinda had a son, Charles A. Huling, by a previous marriage. Charles served as the postmaster of the Sunset post office in Lincoln township. Lucinda was born on August 25, 1829, in New York.
We know that Joseph and Lucinda had two daughters. It is possible that Henry Bunker, who married Eliza Wickham, was a son. We do not know for certain. The daughters were Amelia Bunker Holcomb and Lucy Bunker McDonald.
Lucinda and a son, Giles, went to New York to visit the old home at Jamestown. We do not know whether the son was a Bunker or a Ruling. However, Lucinda and Giles died of smallpox at Jamestown. They were buried at night.
Joseph M. Bunker married again after the death of Lucinda. The family stone in the local cemetery carries the inscription, E. V., wife of Joseph M. Bunker, died December 6, 1894.
BURDICK :
A number of local residents remember the Burdick family. Zenas C. Burdick was a prominent member of the local G.A.R.
Zenas C. Burdick was born on December 17, 1836, in Erie county, New York. His father was Harris C. Burdick who was born in
