ber 12, 1872. On November 22, 1899, David married Esther Cerka of our community. Esther was born on April 5, 1872.
David and Esther were the parents of three children. They were Ray, Fay, and Hazel. Ray, Fay, and Hazel Ballinger Borchert are living in our community in 1955.
David was a railroad man before he started farming. David and Esther moved to a farm in our community in 1907.
David died on September 29, 1931. Esther died on May 25, 1951.
BARNARD :
George Barnard was one of the leading citizens in the history of our community. He was an active lodge member. He was prominent in the G.A.R. George served as the mayor of Zearing. However, he valued his work in the church most of all.
John Wesley (George) Barnard was born at Kingston, Canada, on March 22, 1845. He was the youngest of thirteen children. When George was a small child the family moved to Hampshire, Kane county, Illinois. At the age of sixteen, George enlisted in the Union forces and served nearly three years during the Civil War.
George arrived in Sherman township, Story county, Iowa, on May 16, 1869. After unloading his wagon three times, because of the muddy trails, he decided not to go any further west. George said that a circus tried to cross Sherman township in the fall of 1869. The mud delayed the circus and he saw camels and zebras for a week.
George married Mary McArthur of Colo, Iowa, on October 3, 1878. George and Mary were the parents of six children. They were Asa, Anna, Ella, Nannie, Charles, and Irma.
George died on May 14, 1935. Mary died in February, 1900.
BARNES :
Ira Barnes was a prominent business man. He moved to Zearing, Iowa, soon after the town was founded. Ira was also prominent in the local G.A.R.
Ira Barnes was born in Erie county, Ohio, in 1832. Ira. married Ettie M. Warren in Wisconsin in 1860. They moved to St. Charles, Illinois, in 1872. In 1876, they moved to Iowa.
Ira and Ettie were the parents of four children. They were Cora, Katie, Harry, and Warren.
Ira died in 1905. We do not have the date of Ettie's death.
BARTINE :
You will find the name Bartine in the story of the pioneers who lived in the territory which was later called Lincoln township. Amos Bartine came to our community in the 1850's. After the Civil War, he returned and established a permanent home in this community.
