In 1946 the War Department published an Honor List of dead and missing in World War II for Army and Army Air Forces personnel. This lists were issued by county within state. Data contained here is taken from that list. The list is found in the Modern Military Records of the National Archives, control number NWCTM-407-WWIICASARMY-IA.
Also in April 1946 the Casualty Section, Office of Public Information, Navy Department published a summary of war casualties for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, containing somewhat less information but including next of kin. Data contained here is taken from that list. The list is found in the National Archives Military Records World War II.
Where possible, grave marker information has been included from the Story County Grave Marker Inscription publications published by the Iowa Genealogical Society. No attempt was made to include the all information on the marker, nor any nearby markers of relatives. The following information is included:
- Surname
- Given Name
- Army Serial Number (Army only)
- Grade. Sometimes called rank.
- Branch. Army or branch within Navy.
- Casualty Type
- Killed. For Navy only, does not specify circumstances but excludes accidents and illness.
- Missing. For Navy only.
- Finding of death. For Army only. Individuals determined to be dead under Public Law 490.
- Died of injuries. For Army only. Those who suffered fatal battle injuries as opposed to wounds, in combat or combat areas, and died in a line-of-duty status.
- Died of wounds. For Army only. Those who were wounded and later died.
- Killed in action. For Army only. An individual who was killed in action, whether at the front or by enemy action in the rear areas, or if a prisoner of war, whether by air bombardment of his prison camp or by being shot while escaping.
- Died, non-battle. For Army only. Other line-of-duty deaths, such as from sickenss, homicide, suicide or accidents outside combat areas (including training and maneuver deaths).
- Next of Kin For Navy only.
- Birth Date Only when found. Sometimes taken from grave marker.
- Death Date Only when found. Sometimes taken from grave marker.
- Cemetery. This is where a marker is found. Burial may or may not have been at the cemetery.
- Comment. Information extracted from the marker.
- Source. The page number grave marker information was found.
