Tom Sandvold, born January 2, 1869 in Sandvold, Norway, came to America as a young man and, on May 19, 1892, he married Carrie Iverson. He farmed the Iver Iverson homestead southeast of Roland until his death in 1903.
Louis Shafland (Shefveland) emigrated from Hoiland, Jaederen, Kristiansand in 1883 at the age of 12 years. With his parents he settled in Cambridge where he attended school and worked on nearby farms. He apprenticed to Mr. Mason, Cambridge jeweler, to learn the watchmaker's trade, after which he moved to Roland and opened his own jewelry store in 1890, sharing space with George Nockling, photographer.
In 1901 he was married to Bertina Hegland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Hegland of Roland. They were parents of seven children.
Mr. Shafland served several terms as mayor of Roland.
