S. O. HEGLAND

S. O. Hegland emigrated from Skanevik, Norway, about 1860, settling near Lisbon, Illinois. In 1961 he enlisted in the Union Army, serving until his discharge in Mobile, Alabama on July 12, 1865. Returning to Lisbon, he married Betsey Larson and then joined his parents who moved to Roland.

Mr. Hegland farmed at several locations near Roland and Nevada before moving to Roland where he entered business. At various times he was engaged in operating a lumber yard, a grain elevator, and the Roland Savings Bank.

MAGNUS C. Hemnes

Magnus C. Hemnes was born in Skudesnes, Norway, on September 14, 1879, and came to this country in 1896 at the age of 16 years.

He farmed near Roland until 1934 when he moved to a farm he purchased near Story City. On December 13, 1905, he was married to Frances Maude Anderson, daughter of Rier and Ann Anderson. They were the parents of seven children: Fred, Abbie (Mrs. Maurice Thompson), Andrew, Esther (Mrs. Leonard Christian), Merle, Floyd, and Myrtle (Mrs. Henry Peterson).

LARS HENDERSON

Lars Henderson, the son of Anna and Helge Haavig of Bommel, Norway, was born January 15, 1825. He came to America in 1856 and settled in Illinois, but later moved to a farm six miles northwest of Roland. He dropped the "Haavig" from his name and became Lars Henderson. He and his wife, Anna, had seven children, three of whom grew to maturity, Nels, Christian, and Helge. Lars enlisted in the Union Army November 18, 1864, and was honorably discharged July 19, 1865. He was a charter member of the Salem Church, and was a quiet and loyal G. A. R. man.
