Ole J. Erickson, one of the later pioneers of the community, emigrated to Iowa at the age of three years with his parents, Sol and Anna Erickson. They came by covered wagon from Illinois and settled on a farm two miles east and five miles south of Roland.
In June 1900, he was married to Carrie Ritland of Huxley. They lived on the homestead a few years, later moving to Roland where he taught five terms of Norwegian (parochial) school. After school consolidation, he was one of the first drivers of the horse -drawn school buses.
After working for P. A. Solem, he purchased the latter's furniture business and later took his son, Archie, in as a partner. He taught Sunday School for about 25 years and served as precentor, or "klokkar", for several years.
Mr. and Mrs. Erickson had six children, Mrs. B. H. Knudtson, Archie (deceased), Clarence, Mrs. Marion Peterson, Mrs. Cesar Garrido, and Reuben.

Andrew A. Espeland came to America from Bergen, Norway, in 1873 at the age of 33 years. He married Anna Johanna Ingebritsen on September 18, 1890.
