John J. Twedt, a seaman from the time he was 14 until 1866 when he came to America, was born March 10, 1845 at Kvindherred, Norway. He married Anna Veiner Erickson, daughter of Jacob and Ellen Erickson, in 1868. They were parents of nine children; the oldest, Jacob, died in infancy; Joseph, Jacob, Ellen (Mrs. T. I. Sampson), Carrie (Mrs. P. J. Peterson), Hannah (Mrs. E. R. Grove), Lizzie (Mrs. J. A. Rutherford), Clara (Mrs. E. O. Highland), and Albert.

Hactor T. Wicks, born 1846, and Madala Wicks, born 1847, were married in 1870 and emigrated to America as bride and groom that same spring, settling in Lisbon, Illinois. They came to the Roland area in 1875. Mr. and Mrs. Wicks had ten children, two of whom, Millie and Thomas, died in infancy.
