1923 Cornerstone- With the 1954 Milford Merry Maids
Left to Right: Norene Hughes, Janet Simonsen, Marcia Jacobson, Judy Jorgensen, Shirley Groomes, Sandra Nelson, Jurine Borton, Sandra Mortvedt, Marlene Morfey, Janet Rasmusson, Ruth Warren. These young ladies were the Milford Merry Maids 4-H Club of 1953-'54. They are posed in front of the southwest corner of the Milford Twp school right in front of the cornerstone of the school. The camera is looking to the north-northeast. The date is engraved -- 1923. This is the date of the start of the construction of the school building. The school was completed in the spring of 1924 and classes were started in the new building in March of 1924. This cornerstone was opened, from the inside of the building, in the late summer of 1991 when the school passed from the control of the school board. The contents were in quite good shape. There were two histories (one very brief), two newspaper, three coins, and some pictures. The items, except for the pictures, which have disappeared, were available for viewing at the Supt's office at the Nevada Community School. Hopefully, whoever removed the photos is supplying them with a safe environment and a good home. The Nevada Public Library has zeroxed copies of the two histories in a notebook about the history of the Nevada Community School in the reference section. One of these copies contains the names of about 250-300 people who, at one time or other, taught in the rural schools of Milford Township.
