The following is an example of a certification letter. This one was made by the clerk of the county court to the state adjutants office to certify the 1862 military eligible count.

Sir: In compliance with Chapter 17 Sect 2 of An Act Entitled as Act to amend the Militia Law of the State of Iowa passed by the General Assembly of the State of Iowa at its extra Session A D 1861 Approved May 28th 1861 I herewith transmit an abstract showing the number of persons subject to military duty in said Story County as follows
