Hack Rental

IN THE EARLY 1900's diversion and entertainment was pretty much what one made it. Here in a hack rented from the local livery stable are a group of McCallsburg's youth on their way to St. Anthony to a dance. Judging from the fishing poles strung along the roof of the hack and the rifles some of the young blades are carrying, some fishing and shooting of squirrels will also be done. Fishing was good in the Iowa River then. Passengers in this early day vehicle are Howard Birch, Mabel Hanson, Amanda Halverson, May Hardinger, Bessie Igo, Casper Fagerland, Ralph Dillin, Ethel Phifer, Bruce Snyder, Conrad Fagerland, driver, and Minnie Hanson.

THE FOURTH OF JULY then as now called for some kind of a special celebration and it usually started off with a parade This scene was main street of McCallsburg about 1904.
