McCALLSBURG AT ONE TIME boasted two banks. The McCallsburg State Bank pictured above, was founded in 1905 or 1906 by Sam Hegland. He was president and his son, Thor Hegland was vice president. Directors were F. E. Menzel, Gerhard Krohn and Milton E. Garman. Among the other early residents who at one time or another was employed by the bank included C. C. Harris, Bill Lorentzen, Gustav Ludwig and N. H. Nelson. Pictured above is the late Frank Nail who at one time served as cashier of the bank, Thor Hegland, Sam Hegland and the lady employee has been identified as Henrietta Arney. The bank was robbed in 1919 or 1920, the robbers making their way through a wall to the safe. It was located in the same building which houses the Auestad Grocery now. The bank like so many others, was a victim of the depression in 1931. Sherrill Hegland with his family, a grandson of the founder, lives north of McCallsburg where he farms.
