COLLINS SCHOOL YEAR 1982-83
August 27, 1982. Collins and Maxwell are not only sharing facilities this year, but also teachers. Several of the Collins staff will be teaching in Maxwell and some of the Maxwell staff will be teaching in Collins for the school year.
New faces at Collins this year include several Maxwell teachers who have moved to their new positions in the middle school. Sherry Gehlsen will be sharing duties between the two schools, teaching special education. Rose Wilson will be teaching in middle school at Collins. Helen Thompson will be teaching seventh and eighth English at Collins. She has taught in Maxwell for over 20 years. Carol Waters will be teaching full time in Collins, teaching art, reading, and spelling. The music team of Dan and Merrilee Hartzer will be instructing at both Maxwell and Collins. Dan is the instrumental instructor and Merrilee is the vocal music instructor. Jim Loonan will be teaching middle school shop at Collins and 7th grade social studies.
September 2, 1982. With the Collins-Maxwell school merger, the football team will have new faces as six Collins students will be participating for the first time on the Maxwell field.
September 7, 1982. Maxwell's football season got off to a disappointing start Friday night, losing the season opener to Bondurant, 19-0. "Our defense played well in spots, but our offense still needs work" said Coach Sullivan.
September 8, 1982. The Collins girls volleyball team defeated LDF 3-2. Collins games won: 15-8, 15-14, and 15-14.
September 10, 1982. Hot Lunch Menu: Mon. Submarine sandwich, buttered vegetable, relish, dessert, milk. Tues. Sliced turkey in gravy, buttered rice, lettuce salad, fruit, milk. Wed. Beef burgers, tri tators, sliced tomatoes, dessert, milk. Thurs. Meatballs in gravy, mashed potatoes, relish, orange whip, milk. Fri. Hamburger with noodles, green beans, cake with topping, milk.
September 13, 1982. School Board Elections. Rod Maxwell is running for the seat open on the Maxwell board, and Tom Lovig for the seat on the Collins board.
September 20, 1982. Maxwell dropped to 1 and 1 in the Mid-Iowa Conference football action Friday night, falling to LDF 20-6. Maxwell-Collins had 9 yards rushing to LDF's 202. Maxwell-Collins had 164 yards in passing.
