A hearing on the budget for the coming year was held during the meeting with no comments on it. A motion to certify the budget -- which totals $478,230 -- was passed unanimously.
March 22, 1982. Joan Niland, kindergarten teacher at Collins has been teaching her students to speak Spanish. "We have been learning songs, games, and how to count in Spanish. Saint Patrick's Day called for a celebration, so a Spanish party was held.
March 24, 1982. New Collins teacher -- There is a new face around school at Collins lately. Carol Wauters has taken over the job as art director. Carol finished her courses at Iowa State University and graduated in December of last year.
March 30, 1982. A forum-type meeting on the proposed Collins-Maxwell school district will be held Monday, April 5 at the Collins school, 7:30 p.m. John Nicholls, Supt. of Collins schools said the meeting will be formally structured and limited to a reasonable length. It will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Anyone in the community with a question on the proposed merger is asked to write it down and turn it in at the school office by 3:00 p.m. Friday of this week. The school board will meet at 3:00 p.m. Sunday and go over any questions that are turned in. Written questions will be answered at the meeting and anyone who wishes to speak will be recognized and asked to come to the microphone. No speaking from the crowd will be allowed.
Nicholls also said a newsletter is going out to residents of the Collins district this week and is expected to be in the hands of voters Thursday. The newsletter has been written to answer a number of questions on the proposed merger.
March 30, 1982. Announcement of the annual senior class play and spaghetti dinner will be held Friday, April 2, 1982. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the high school field house in Collins. The tickets are now on sale from any junior or senior from the Collins high school. Price is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. This is a combined price for dinner and the play following. Menu for the dinner will consist of spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert, and a choice of drinks. The dinner is being prepared by mothers of the junior and senior class. The play, "Desperate Ambrose" is being directed by Dennis Moore. Leads in the play are Jeff Sesker as Ambrose, Jon Armentrout as Hoot Owl Pete, John Lengeling as the sheriff. Proceeds from the play and dinner will go to the junior towards their junior-senior class prom. The play will start art 7:45 p.m.
April 6, 1982. The informational meeting scheduled at the school for Monday night was postponed due to bad weather earlier in the day. The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.
John Nicholls, Supt., said the school board has received some 20 written questions from district residents to be answered at the meeting. Nicholls said another newsletter will be mailed to district electors before the meeting.
April 7, 1982. Collins Honor Roll: A total of 24 of 72 students qualified for the honor roll for the third quarter in the Collins junior and senior high. The students had at least a 3.0 grade point average for all of their courses. 7th Grade. Meladee Marrs. 8th Grade: Kyle Howell, Celeste Lovig, Karina Luing.
