February 9, 1982. Three Collins teams and one from Madrid were champions at the Collins Youth Basketball tournament that was completed this weekend. Collins 6th grade girls defeated Madrid 43-41. Maxwell finished 3rd. 7th grade girls -- Collins defeated Maxwell 30-28. The Nevada Sycamores finished 3rd. 6th grade boys -- Madrid defeated Collins 36-17. Nevada Ron's Sporting Goods finished third. 7th grade boys, Collins defeated Maxwell 31-17. Nevada Spartans were 3rd. The tournament, in its third year, was sponsored by the Collins Booster Club.

February 23, 1982. The Maxwell Rockets downed Collins Boys in Class 1A Sectional play Monday night at Colo 60-49. Collins scoring: Steve Coughenour 20, Jeff Sesker 15, Ric Salyers 8, Mike Lovig 6.
March 3, 1982. The Maxwell and Collins School Boards voted unanimously Tuesday night to push for an election to merge the two districts.
The vote was taken at a special joint meeting of the two boards held at Maxwell school. All the Maxwell board members - Joanne Longnecker, Robert Churchill, Dean Gander, Donald Jacobson, and Rodney Maxwell were present. Present from the Collins board were Tom Lovig, Myrna Schmitt, and Gary Horn. Collins school superintendent John Nicholls said he had talked to members Mike Mullihan and Keith Patterson about the question and felt they would have voted for the action also if they had been able to be present.
The boards first action toward setting up the reorganization election is to hire a lawyer and have petitions prepared for signing by registered voters in the districts who favor the election. The members of both boards present voted unanimously to hire Walter L. Hetzel of Ames to prepare the petitions. Hetzel is presently the attorney for both districts.
In another unanimous vote, the boards decided to stipulate that all members of the board of the proposed combined district be elected at large with two to come from Collins and three from Maxwell based on population of present districts.
