The results of the straw ballot concerning what school district the Collins people would prefer to merge with if this comes about was discussed. Maxwell and Colo both received large numbers of votes. It was decided to set up separate meetings with the Maxwell and Colo boards and not to meet with the Baxter and Mingo boards at this time. The Department of Public Instruction will be called on to conduct a comprehensive study with the Colo and Maxwell districts. Mike Mullihan and Keith Patterson were selected as the board's representatives for the negotiation team.
The third reading of the Board Policy raising the substitute teacher pay to $33 was approved. The second reading of the Board Policy on attendance was approved.
The certified enrollment is 161.
The superintendent's vacancy and scheduled interviews later this week was discussed.
September 23, 1981. The Collins Girls lost three straight games in the volleyball matchup with Baxter at Collins. Serving inconsistency was the Clipperettes' biggest problem. The play of Joanie and Dana Reitan highlighted Collins' effort.
September 30, 1981. The new superintendent of Collins School is John Nicholls, recent PhD graduate from the University of Iowa. Nicholls has been a high school principal at Melcher-Dallas school district and a social studies teacher in Marengo.
Nicholls' wife, Kathy, is a Polk County Health Nurse. She is a native of Milford, Iowa. The Nicholls indicated they will be moving to Collins.
September 30, 1981. The Collins Girls volleyball team posted their first victory of the season, defeating Colo three games to one. Collins won the first game 16-14, lost the second game and won the final two games 15-10 and 15-9. Becky Newlin had 17 of 18 serves successful.
October 7, 1981. The Collins Girls volleyball team lost to Green Mountain one to three.
October 9, 1981. Week of October 12. Hot Lunch Menu. Mon. Ham salad sandwich, mixed vegetables, buttered rice, dessert, milk. Tues. Chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes with butter, peanut butter sandwich, apple wedges, milk. Wed. Lasagna, relish, rolls or French bread, fruit, Rice Krispie bar, milk. Thurs. October 14, 1981. Collins Girls volley team lost to Colo in the first round of the Class 1A Sectional Tournament one to three.
October 21, 1981. The Collins school board met for their regular meeting on October 19, 1981. A request by Mike Mullihan was approved that will allow the use of the gym on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. for family recreation.
The board spent a long time studying the proposals presented by the Collins Education Association for the Master Contract. They set October 26 at 7:30 a.m. as the date to meet with the CEA negotiation team if the time is suitable to them.
The annual audit report was accepted.
