June 20, 1979. Discussion of upcoming special elections was held at the school board meeting Monday night. The September 11 elections concern a proposed increased in the district enrichment tax and the transfer of about $5800 in funds from bonds and interest of the school house fund to the general fund. The purpose changes is to improve the school curriculum and to ease the present busing problem.

Roger Huggins told the board he felt the new admission charge for the baseball games should be rescinded, mainly because community volunteer labor has been used to construct and maintain the ball park. The Ta Ma Ja Conference voted this spring to allow conference schools to charge $1.50 and $1.00 for admission to summer games, the same fee as charged for basketball games. The board felt they could not rescind the admission charge in the middle of the summer and will consider Mr. Huggins' comments again in the spring.

June 21, 1979. The Collins Clippers scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning, winning 3-0 over LDF. Charles Fish went the distance, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 11. The Clippers' conference record is 7-2. Both teams played errorless ball. Timely hits by John Fish, Jim Huggins, and Tony Thornton were keys to the victory.

June 22, 1979. Approval of any discrimination rules by the Iowa Civil Rights Commission may end Iowa girls' six-player basketball. The commission voted 6-1 to give notice it supports adopting 14 pages of rules after a period of public comment, hearings, and possibly rewriting. If adopted, the rules would also force state colleges to alter their athletic budgets, shifting money from the men's to the women's programs. The commission said state law requires it to enforce equal access to financial aids and to membership on teams, excluding contact sports for men and women.

July 6, 1979. The Colo Blue Devils defeated Collins baseball team 2-1 Thursday night. John Wilson, Colo pitcher, held the Clippers to only 2 hits, striking out 9 and walked only 4. Colo's conference record is 7-10.

July 10, 1979. Collins Board of Education made some appointments and reviewed fees and prices. Bea Ogburn was appointed board secretary, and Marie Morrison school district treasurer. Myrna Schmitt was appointed to review board policies and make suggestions for updating them. Book rental fees were rescinded in order to accommodate a motion to raise fees to $7.50. Fees were previously $5.00. The issue of the proposed transfer of bonds and interest portion of the schoolhouse fund to the general fund and the proposed raising of the enrichment tax from five the ten percent goes before the voters in September.

The deadline for nomination papers for school board candidacy is Thursday, August 2nd at 5:00 p.m. Ray Armentrout has advised he will not seek reelection.

July 10, 1979. Collins will play Ballard at Huxley on July 14 in the Girls Sectional Softball tournament.

July 11, 1979. Ta Ma Ja all-conference girls softball selections -- Kristi Richardson and Alice Coughenour of Collins were awarded all-conference Honorable Mention.
