The Maxwell Rockets edged out the Collins boys 90-89 in a thriller game. Collins led by 6 at halftime and the game was tied at the 3rd quarter with Maxwell making 2 tip-ins in the last 35 seconds for the Maxwell victory. Collins scoring: Kirk Patterson 24, Bill Dunshee 22 (10 for 10 on free throws), Doug Klemme 17, Charles Fish 12.
February 1, 1978. The voters in the Collins School district approved an "additional enrichment tax" by an overwhelming margin, 126-67. Its effective for a period not to exceed five years.
February 7, 1978. Collins basketball girls were defeated by Semco 75-52 on the Collins court in the last regular season game, Ta-Ma-Ja action. The Collins boys defeated Semco 57-53 in Ta-Ma-Ja action. This is the last regular game of the season for the Clippers, closing out with 9-9 record. Coach Brooks said, "We played a good disciplined game." Scoring: Doug Klemme 22, Marvin Hampton 10, Kirk Patterson 10, Bill Dunshee 6, Charles Fish 6, Ed Hamilton 2. March 6, 1978. Iowans are apparently more interested in boys high school basketball than girls, a poll published in the Des Moines Sunday Register found. Although boys prep basketball enjoys a 2-1 margin over the girls' attendance, figures for the 2 state tournaments conflict with the poll results. The girls last year drew 92,000 in 8 sessions, while the boys attracted 94,000 in10 sessions.
April 11, 1978. By law, all new school busses must have a strobe unit mounted on top of the school bus. This is to help their visibility in stormy weather. The law does not demand their installation on busses already in service.

May 4, 1978. Other editor's say . . . Phony enrollments. The Iowa House and Senate have passed different versions of a bill to permit school districts to disregard, for one year at least, more of their enrollment loss in determining spending under the legislature's strict budget controls.
