July 17, 1976. West Marshall and Collins, semifinal, played at the Colo diamond. West Marshall rallied from a 2-0 deficit to edge Collins3-2 and advance to the semifinals of the sectional tournament. Collins appeared to be in good shape when the Clippers scored 2 runs in the 4th inning with the strong pitching of Steve Oglesby who had 11 strikeouts and just 2 walks for the game. Collins got its 1st run in the 1st inning on singles by Doug Klemme and Kirk Patterson, and a ground out to 2nd base by Oglesby enabled the runner on 3rd to score. Collins added another run in the 4th when Steve Lillard walked, stole 2nd and scored on a double by Oglesby. West Marshall tied the game in the 5th inning when Dave Griffin singled in a pair of runs with 2 outs. The game continued into extra innings. Collins threatened in the 8th when Jim Wright singled and stole 2nd, but did not score. "This was the best game we played in the last 4 or 5," said Coach Bill Brooks. `It was a good year.'" Game Summary: West Marshal 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 error. Collins 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 error.
July 20, 1976. Girls sectional tournament in softball. Potent North Polk pushed its season record to 23-3 with 12-0 win over Collins in 3 innings. North Polk scored 3 in the 2nd and 9 in the 3rd inning to take the victory. Rhonda Smith and Sue Long pitched for Collins, allowing 4 walks, and making 4 errors. North Polk had 6 hits.
