June 15, 1974. Collins Girls Softball, Ta-Ma-Ja conference,improved in all phases of the game, but came up short as Baxter scored 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning for the 6-5 victory. Dunshee pitched, allowing 10 hits, 4 strikeouts, and 4 walks.
Collins Boys Baseball scored 9 runs in the 1st 3 innings and had to hold on for an 11-8 victory over Baxter in Ta-Ma-Ja action. Denny Long had a home run to provide a 9-0 lead. Collins scored 3 runs in each of the first 3 innings. Long also hit a double, driving in 7 runs for the game. Baxter rallied with 5 runs in the 6th inning, but could not overcome Collins' 11 runs. Game highlights: Patterson had 3 straight hits, Lillard reached base 4 times, Long hit 2 doubles and a home run. Clippers are now 5 and 1 and 3-1 in Ta-Ma-Ja.
July 1, 1974. Collins Clippers Baseball team defeated Garwin 8-5. Keith Patterson did the pitching - 7 hits, 4 strikeouts, 3 walks. Collins' 10-hit attack included Ken Caulkins' 3 singles plus Steve Lillard and Denny Long 2 hits each. The Clippers tallied 4 runs in the 5th inning to provide the margin of 8-5 victory.
July 2, 1974. Collins Boys Baseball team defeated Maxwell 7-2 in Ta-Ma-Ja Conference. Maxwell outhit Collins 9-7, but Collins managed 4 runs in the 5th inning, and Maxwell was able to score only 1 additional run. Ken Caulkins pitched: 7 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Doug Fuller of Maxwell struck out 10 Collins batters. Collins is 7-4 in Ta-Ma-Ja Conference.
Collins Girls Softball team defeated Maxwell twice Monday evening as the Clipperettes won the completion of an earlier game, which had been called by darkness. Collins took the victory 17-15 in the first contest by scoring 5 runs in the last of the 7th. In the regular scheduled game Collins scored 13 runs in the 1st 3 innings and went on to defeat Maxwell 19-12. Cindy Dunshee hurled the victory on a 5-hitter, and only 2 walks.
July 9, 1974. Nomination papers for the September 10 School Board elections in the county school districts are now available from the School Superintendent's Office. Positions on local school boards that are up for election this year include the following: Collins, District 1 (one year) Howard Hofer. District 4 (two years) Carolyn Frerichs; Treasurer, Marie Morrison.
July 10, 1974. Collins Boys used the last 3 innings against Baxter on their diamond to defeat the home team 8-3. The two teams matched each other through 6 innings. In the top of the 7th a base hit by Walton, an error, and a walk filled the bases. Denny Long smashed a triple, scoring 3 runs, setting the stage for 2 errors, which scored another Collins run. Collins pitcher Ken Caulkins: only 3 hits, 8 strikeouts, and 2 walks. Collins has 9-4 in Ta-Ma-Ja Conference and last game Friday night against Colo.
July 16, 1974. Collins team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Baxter-Slater Sectional Baseball tournament with a convincing 15-5 decision over Mingo. Collins used a 9-run rally in the 5th inning to win by the 10-run rule after a narrow 6-5 lead going into the inning. Keith Patterson pitched, allowing 8 hits, 6 strikeouts, and walked none. Mingo pitcher helped Collins with 10 walks and also the team committed 7 errors. Denny Long led Collins offense with 2 doubles, which came with the bases loaded in the 5th inning. Collins now faces Prairie City in the quarterfinals.
