COLLINS SCHOOL YEAR 1973-74

August 10, 1973. The Collins School Board has two vacancies with Cyril Lengeling and Erwin Frerichs seeking election.

September 12, 1973. Collins Community School district elected Cyril Lengeling, receiving 53 votes in District 3 and Erwin Frerichs elected for District 4, receiving 56 votes. Their term begins at the coming school board meeting.

September 26, 1973. Girls Softball Mingo scored 4 runs in the 4th inning and Collins scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th, losing in the sectional tournament, which finishes their softball season. This is Collins' first season of competition in the sectional tournament. Jan Talburt, pitched allowing 7 hits and walking 3. Chris Dunshee had 3 hits including a triple in the 7th inning.

October 5, 1973. Rob Meyerhoff, sophomore, has been making rope from twine and also leather harnesses and will be displaying these items at the Living History Farms in West Des Moines for two days.

October 22, 1973. A reception for the Collins Community school faculty and the first meeting of the Collins P.T.O. was held, President Mrs. Bob Meyerhoff presiding. Charles Liston, Superintendent, introduced the members of the faculty for 1973-74. Open house in all school rooms followed and refreshments were served in the dining room. Officers elected for the coming year: Pres. Mrs. Bob Schmitt, Vice President Mrs. Mike Robinett.

October 24, 1973. Collins lost 13% enrollment, 30 students beginning the September 72-73 school year. Prior year enrollment 257, current year 237. Charles Liston, Supt. said families have been moving due to occupational needs. The community still wants to have a school with no thought at this time of any consolidation. Next closest enrollments are Colo and Maxwell, each listing 363 student. Collins is not the smallest school in the state. Clark Stevens, Supt. for Nevada -- declining student numbers is a national trend, the average family size is declining.

November 10, 1973. The good news for Story County schools is they don't foresee having to close schools due to heating fuel shortages. Collins expects the same amount of fuel oil as they received last year with possibly a minor increase. Supt. Liston said they have turned thermostats down a bit to conserve fuel.

November 12, 1973. Honor Roll first nine weeks. Seniors: Ken Caulkins, William Oswalt; Juniors: Herbert Atwood, Mary Beth Kingman, Dennis Long, Mary Beth Milligan, Rebecca Oswalt, William Partridge, Cathy Schmitt, Mark Wilson; Sophomores: Sandra Fish, Delores Klemme; Freshmen: Sandra Dodd, Kristy Grimm, Teresa Hugen; Eighth: Karen Ball, Jon Huggins, Doreen Krausman, John Lint, Coleen Partridge, Tracy Thornton; Seventh: Tracy Armentrout, Brenda McQuire, Wayne Stratton.
