May 22, 1973. Commencement Speaker Russell Myers entitled his talk "You are what you have done, and you will become what you will do," tying in with the senior class motto of "You are what you do, not what you think or say." The upper 15% of the graduating class were honored by the presentation of the gold honor cords: Cathy Kingman, Roxanne Newman, Cindy Schmitt, Marla Shaw, Craig Stratton. Diplomas were given to the 27 members of the class by Chester Lillard, Pres. of the Collins Board of Education. May 24, 1973. Boys State Track Meet. As early as 1905 Iowa State College sponsored state outdoor high school track championships. Friday and Saturday over 2,000 athletes, representing four classes of competition; WW, W, B, C. will compete at the Drake stadium in Des Moines. It is the first time in many years that a single site has been used for the Iowa High School Athletic Association event. Athletes who finished 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the district competition will be competing. Collins participants--Bill Oswalt will compete in the High Jump, Long Jump, and Pole Vault, Steve Carroll will compete in the Long Jump and Pole Jump.
May 29, 1973. The joint county school system of Polk and Story counties, which will become a legal corporation under state law on July 1, held its organizational meeting last week. Mrs. John W. Carr of Des Moines was elected chairman [person] of the board; Dr. Richard Lampshire was elected to vice chairman [person]. Other members of the board include James W. Beal of Maxwell, Dr. N. H. Brinkman of Colo, Dean Cox of Des Moines, Ralph Lynn of West Des Moines, and Mrs. L. H. Mather of Ames.
June 1, 1973. LDF overwhelmed Collins in the baseball season opening game 15-0.
June 4, 1973. The 6th grade made a field trip to Des Moines Monday and visited the state capital, the historical building, Anderson-Erickson dairy and enjoyed lunch at McDonald's. Accompanying the class were Hope Robinson, Mrs. Grimm, and Mrs. Armentrout.
