May 21, 1973. Girls State Track Meet (Drake Stadium, Des Moines). When a team is contending for the state track championship, it needs help from other teams. This did not occur as Collins finished 3rd for the 2nd time in three years. Collins scored 26 points, same as last year in winning the championship. This year Woodbine with sophomore wiz Debbie Esser, won the title with 33 points. HLF (Victor) was 2nd with 27. Deb Carroll turned in another outstanding performance, defending both her 100 Yd Dash (11.3 secs) and 220 Yd Dash championship in 25 secs. Diana Atwood gave Debbie Esser strong competition in the 100 Meter Hurdles until catching the 3rd to last hurdle. That didn't slow her down much, but just enough to enable Esser to win in 14.3 secs, while Atwood tied the old record of 14.4 secs in the 2nd place finish. Atwood ran her best 220 Yd Low Hurdle race in 29.7 clocking; again Esser was in front with finish time of 29.6. The other 6 Collins points were in the 440 Yd Relay, one of the most exciting races at the finish. In the preliminaries Linn-Mar set a new record of 49.9 secs and Collins also had a record time of 50.1 secs. In the finals the Clipperettes were in 4th place when Deb Carroll received the baton for the anchor leg. She passed one girl on the curve, another early in the final straightaway, and then challenged Linn-Mar runner to the tape. Lucas nipped Carroll by an inch or two as they won the relay in 50.6 with Collins getting the same time in a second place ruling. There was a delay before the official announcement was made on the winner.
