Collins Girls fell 73-64, ending its conference season. Collins closed to within 63-62 in the 4th quarter, but then went cold. Scoring: Deb Carroll 37, Jan Talburt 21, Cindy Dunshee 4, Donna Barrett 2. Defense Rebounds and Interceptions: Diana Atwood 7 rbs, 3 ints; Cathy Kingman 7 rbs, 1 int; Cindy Tiffany 5 rbs, 2 ints; Darla Stevens 5 rbs.
Collins Boys had an opening 6-0 lead with Bondurant-Farrar coming back for a halftime lead 41-31, with a final score Bondurant-Farrar 85, Colllins 71. Scoring: Steve Carroll 27, Bill Oswalt 20, Mark Carver 7, Ken Caulkins 7, Greg Rhoads 7, Keith Patterson 2, Frank Beavers 1. Clippers' shooting percentage -- 53%, and free throws 19 of 26. Collins team had a rebounding edge 34-30.
February 13, 1973. Girls Basketball Sectional Tournament at State Center. Collins encountered LDF, Ta-Ma-Ja Conference champion, and lost in overtime 79-73. Collins will face Colo in the consolation game. By halftime the lead had changed hands 7 times with Collins leading 36-33 at the halfway mark. Collins also had a 3rd quarter lead of 53-48. LDF had a 70-67 lead with 1:21 left in the game. Deb Carroll scored with 19 seconds remaining to put the game into overtime. Collins' turnovers were significant to the outcome of the game. Scoring: Deb Carroll 25, Cindy Dunshee 24 (12 of 15 field goal attempts), Jan Talburt 24. Collins team shooting was 56%.
February 14, 1973. Collins stayed alive in the Girls Basketball Chase by fighting off Colo 71-55 in the consolation finals of the Sectional Tournament at State Center. "After losing a heartbreaker last night to LDF, we came back real strong tonight," said Coach Bill Brooks. "This was probably one of our steadiest games of the year." Scoring: Deb Carroll 36, Cindy Dunshee 17, Jan Talburt 16, Donna Barret 2. Shooting percentage - 55%. Defense: Diana Atwood, with a tremendous defense job, had 10 rebounds and 9 interceptions; Cathy Kingman had 5 rebounds, 3 interceptions; and Cindy Tiffany has 5 rebounds and one interception. The Ta-Ma-Conference has four teams advancing to the district tournament: Collins, Maxwell, LDF, and Garwin.
February 19, 1973. (Feb.19-23) Mon. Bar-B-Que pork on bun, French fries relish, pudding or fruit, and milk. Tues. creamed potatoes, green peanut beans, rolls, peach crisp, milk. Wed. scalloped potatoes and ham, peanut peanut sandwiches, apple salad, cookie, milk. Thurs. soup, relish, rolls, fruit, milk. Fri. macaroni and cheese, egg salad or meat sandwiches, vegetable, fruit Jell-O, milk.
February 19, 1973. LDF Used 63 percent shooting to eliminate Collins Girls from the District Tournament--70 to 46. LDF made 10 of 11 field goals in the 2nd quarter. "They blew us out in the 2nd quarter," commented Coach Brooks. Collins season record is 14 wins, 9 losses.
Diana Atwood set a single season rebounding record as she grabbed 12 rebounds to put her season total at 196. Cathy Clemons set the old record of 191 rebounds in 1967. Atwood also had 5 inceptions. Cathy Kingman 5 rebounds, 2 interceptions, Cindy Tiffany 4 rebounds, 3 interceptions. Scoring: Deb Carroll 18, Jan Talburt 16, Cindy Dunshee 12.
February 20, 1973. Boys Sectional Tournament at State Center, first round. Collins defeated NESCO 77-54 in the 1st round. Collins had a halftime lead of 36-27. Scoring: Greg Rhoads 18, Steve Carroll 16, Bill Crabb 12, Bill Oswalt 12, Mark Carver 9, Ken Caulkins 5, Frank Beavers 5. Shooting percentage -- 43%. Free throws: 15 of 32. Team rebounds: Collins 44 and NESCO 40.
