December 12, 1972. Summer baseball to have 2 classes. The Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association has adopted a 2-class summer baseball program to begin in summer 1973. A survey of member schools a year ago and this year indicated a majority larger than 2 to 1 margin favored a 2-class program. The summer program last year included a record number of 464 schools. In the past the summer program has always been a one-class program with one state champion crowned.
December 13, 1972. Holiday Tournaments This season, for the first time, the Iowa High Athletic Association has allowed boys basketball teams to take advantage of the opportunity for Christmas holiday tournament competition this December. The two or three extra contests will have no effect on the participating teams' regular season games limitation. The holiday meets must be played between December 26 and 31. There is a 200 mile one-way travel limitation. Collins will be playing at Alleman. Other teams are North Polk, Ogden, Coon Rapids.
December 16, 1972. The Collins guards held Maxwell's Patrice Owens to one of her all-time low scoring, 18 points, but freshman Karla Thompson came through with 41 points to lead Maxwell to a come from behind 73-60 victory over the Clipperettes. Reeves scored 14 points. Dianna Atwood's job was to keep the ball away from Owens. Cindy Tiffany's job was to keep the pressure on Maxwell forward Mari Reeves. Cathy Kingman was assigned to sag back on to Owens. Freshman Thompson then would have to carry the scoring load for Maxwell. The strategy seemed to be working well throughout the first half and into the 3rd quarter. Freshman Thompson ruined the plan in the last half of the 3rd quarter when she made 5 straight field goals and 7 of 8 to break the game open in favor of Maxwell. The Clipperettes had a surprising 35-32 lead at halftime. Maxwell began scoring in the 3rd quarter to take a 56-49 lead. The boys fast-break offense helped Collins gain an early 10 point and continued throughout the game for a 63-44 victory. Halftime score 31-19. December 20, 1972. Collins Girls fell behind 28-13 at the 1st quarter and were unable to recover, losing to Baxter 69-45. Scoring: Jan Talburt 18, Cindy Dunshee 11, Deb Carroll 7, Sandy Barrett 5, Donna Barrett 4. Diana Atwood, guard, had 13 rebounds and 2 interceptions. Collins girls are 2-4 for the season.
Collins boys had a fast start and continued throughout the game for 83-55 win over Baxter. Coach Behrens said, "It was the best team performance of the season." Scoring: Oswalt 24 (73% shooting) and 13 rebounds, Steve Carroll 23, Bill Crabb 10, Mark Carver 8 (13 rebounds), Greg Rhoads 6, Frank Beavers 4, Jerold Fitzgerald, Ken Caulkins, Tony Moses, and Denny Long 2 points each.
December 29, 1972. The Girls Holiday Basketball Tourney at Story City.Roland-Story jumped to a 20-4 lead after one quarter, but had to scramble to hold off Collins for a 77-66 victory. Collins kept chipping away and finally pulled within 4 points at 52-48 at the end of the 3rd period. The Collins guards also were a key in the comeback. It was 52-52 early in the final quarter before the Norse got their offense rolling and began shutting off Deb Carroll. Scoring: Deb Carroll 45 (21 in 3rd quarter), Cindy Dunshee 13, Jan Talburt 9. Shooting percentage 41%.
