COLLINS SCHOOL YEAR 1972-73

August 15, 1972. School will begin August 28, according to Supt. Richard G. Dexter. Two days of teacher workshops will be held on August 24 and 25. Students may come to the superintendent's office August 22 or 23 to pay school fees. Book rental for kindergarten through 8th grade is $5 with workbooks furnished. Book rental for grades 9 through 12 is $5 with the workbooks extra charge. Lunch fees will be $2 for a 5-day ticket, $4 for a 10-day ticket, and $8 for a 20-day ticket. Single day tickets will be .45 for students and .50 for adults. Student insurance sill be available for those who wish to participate. Bus routes will be announced later.

August 18, 1972. School board candidate filing deadline is Tues. No papers have been filed for either of the two directors' positions, which are currently held by James Wright and Roger Huntrods. Also to be elected is the treasurer as Marie Morrison has not yet filed for reelection.

August 29, 1972. Supt. Dexter reported a total enrollment of 256 students, up 10 from last year's 246 and just one short of the 257 enrolled on opening day two years ago. The enrollment was up in both the elementary and high school, with 116 in K-6 (112 last year), and 140 in 7-12 (134 last year). Enrollment in the following grades: 7th - 27 (24), 8th - 25 (22), 9th - 21 (18), 10th - 21 (21), 11th - 21 (25), 12th - 25 (24).

Maxwell enrollment is 362 compared to 381 the past year. This is the second consecutive year of smaller student enrollment. Colo increased to 352 students compared to 344 the past year.

August 31, 1972. Ken Caulkins pitched a one-hitter to lead Collins to a 11-2 victory over Green Mountain in the Star Conference fall baseball tournament, 1st round game. The lone hit came with 2 out in the 7th inning. Collins' 11 runs came with 4 hits and Green Mountain team committing 8 errors. No fielding errors by Collins.

September 8, 1972. The Clippers banged 16 hits with 4 players achieving 3 hits apiece for a 13-1 victory over New Providence in the Star Conference fall baseball tournament championship game. Ken Caulkins allowed only 3 hits, and had 16 strikeouts; also had 9 walks.

Bill Crabb was recently named to the all conference first team Baseball Summer Season Ta-Ma-Ja conference.

September 12, 1972. School Board Elections. All three unopposed candidates were elected in light voter turnout. Elected members are incumbent Roger Huntrods, unopposed Ben Caulkins. Treasurer Marie Morrison was reelected.

September 15, 1972. Collins moved to the semifinals of the sectional baseball tournament with a 5-0 victory over Blakesburg, at New Sharon. Greg Rhoads sparked the Clippers with a pitching victory and hitting a home run for Collins' 1st 2 runs. Rhoads allowed just 2 hits and had 14 strikeouts, and walked 4. Collins 5 runs were scored on 4 hits and a critical Blakesburg error. Fifteen Collins batters stroke out. Collins faces Green Mountain in the semifinals. (No further information found on Collins loss to Green Mountain.)
