March 13, 1972. Girls Track Meet Collins tied defending champion Manilla for the high school division title at the U. S. Federation Indoor Track Meet at the Drake field house. Both teams scored 32 points, BGM of Brooklyn -- 31 points, Belle Plaine -- 28 points. Deb Carroll won the one-lap dash in 17.9 seconds. She also ran the last leg of the 4-lap relay with Diana Atwood, Cathy Kingman, and Mary Beth Kingman, winning in 1 minute 15.2 seconds. Diana Atwood won the 4-flight hurdles in 7.7 seconds.
March 15, 1972. Story County Basketball Teams Girlssecond team selections included Deb Carroll (soph.), forward, and Diana Atwood (jr.) guard. Cathy Kingman, guard, received honorable mention. Boys, first team, Steve Carroll (jr.), guard. Second team selection, Bill Crabb (jr.) guard. Stan Carroll and Mark Carver received honorable mention.

March 31, 1972. The twelve school districts in Story County were $88,887 richer in 1971 due to fines distributed to them collected by the municipal court at Ames, the five justices of peace and five mayors in Story County during the year. Ames Community School received $47,662, the largest amount. Colo received $27,030. Maxwell received $26,024. Collins received $17,086.
April 1, 1972. Within five years predicts E. Wayne Cooley, executive secretary of the Iowa Girls Athletic Association, 99% of the high schools in the state will have a girls basketball program. The sport, which got its start in Iowa in 1920, has enjoyed phenomenal growth in recent years. Two years ago 330 teams competed in girls basketball. With the start of the 1972-73 season, Cooley looks for a field of nearly 400 teams. Most small schools have girls basketball, so the breakthrough will have to be in the larger schools.
