February 22, 1972. Boys Basketball Sectional Tournament Collins opened their sectional tournament efforts with a decisive 62-32 victory over Baxter. Collins' strong defense held Baxter to 18% field goal shooting. Collins had a strong night shooting and rebounding for the decisive win. February 24, 1972. Boys Basketball Sectional Tournament Collins quickly took the lead 13-2 as their two-three zone defense made Colo shoot outside shots. Collins' fast break enabled a 17-11 1st quarter lead. They increased the lead to 47-27 at halftime. The Clippers hit on 34 of 74 shots for 47%. Colo took 89 shots, making 24 for 28% shooting. February 24, 1972. The Collins Board of Education approved a new salary schedule for teachers, raising the base pay from $6800 to $6900. The increase in base pay, raises for individual teachers, will range from $100 to $250. Under the new state laws Collins will not be allowed to increase its budget next year because of declining enrollment. Changes or decreases in the areas of Guidance, Industrial Arts, Driver Education, and Library were approved, and these changes will mean a savings to the district of about $5600. The total money spent on the salary schedule will decrease from $120,145 to $118, 019, decreasing $2,126.
February 25, 1972. Boys Basketball Sectional Tournament Finals Ballard found the hoop just in time last night to pull out a 52-49 victory over the turnover-prone Collins Clippers. The Clippers made 25 turnovers in the game, but were able to lead through the first three quarters. Collins was leading 41-36 early in the 4th quarter; Ballard rallied, hitting six of ten shots enabling them to win the game. Mark Carver's layup lifted Collins to within one point with 12 seconds left in the game. Ballard sank two free throws with four seconds remaining to clinch the victory. Collins was able to launch only 36 shots in the game, making 17. Collins also made 15 of 20 free throws. The Clippers were unable to penetrate Ballard's defense for much of the game and their fast break was contained. March 7, 1972. Star Conference All-Star Selections The conference consists of four teams: Collins, Steamboat Rock, New Providence, and Green Mountain. They do not play a regular league schedule, but hold a tournament during the Christmas holidays. Collins won the girls tourney and Steamboat Rock won the boys tourney. The all-conference selections: Sophomore Deb Carroll was named to a forward position and Junior Cathy Kingman was named to a guard position on the girls team. Junior Steve Carroll was named to a guard position, and Junior Bill Crabb was named to a forward position on the boys team.
