Boys Basketball The boys team boosted their record to 5 and 1 with 84-57 win over Colo. The pressure zone defense was very effective in causing turnovers by Colo, with Collins hitting 40 field goals on 82 shots. December 18, 1971. Girls Basketball The Maxwell girls stopped the Clipperettes 81-61. The halftime score was Maxwell leading 38-30. Maxwell team has an all-state 6 foot forward, Patrice Owen, who scored 63 points, 28 in 50 field goal attempts. Scoring: Deb Carroll 35, Cathy Kingman 18, Jodee Holland 4, Donna Barrett 4.
Boys Basketball Eleven consecutive points in the 4th quarter enabled the Maxwell Rockets to upset Collins 62-55. Collins had a 53-49 lead with five minutes left in the 4th quarter, but did not score another field goal until the final 18 seconds. Maxwell scored their winning points during this time period. December 19, 1971. Girls Basketball: In Collins first win of the season, they scored the final 4 points to win a nip and tuck game 60-58 over Garwin. Scoring: Deb Carroll 38, Donna Barrett 12, Jan Talburt 10.
Boys Basketball: The Clippers won their 2nd consecutive conference game 56-48 over Garwin. Scoring: Stan Carroll 20, Steve Carroll 19, Mark Carver 8, Bill Crabb 6, Bill Oswalt 3.
January 3, 1972. Three hundred six-three girls basketball teams will compete in 32 sectional high school girls basketball tournaments, beginning Saturday, February 12. State Tournament will be held at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on March 7 through 11. Collins girls will meet the winner of the Garwin-Belle Plaine contest at LeGrand.
January 6, 1972. The Collins girls and boys basketball teams moved into the finals of the Star Conference tournament with close wins Wednesday night. The girls team took a 16-9 1st quarter lead, only 2 point halftime lead, and were outscored in the 3rd period to trail Steamboat Rock by 8 points. With 39 seconds remaining in the game Deb Carroll scored a basket for the Clipperettes to lead 65-64, and later scored 2 free throws for a 67-64 victory. Collins boys had 21-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, but had to hang on for a 60-59 decision over New Providence. Collins had 36 turnovers, but a 41-29 rebound advantage helped them survive.
