There are now 75,312 non-public school students in Iowa compared with 104,175 five years ago. May 17, 1971. Girls State Track Meet in Des Moines Iowa at the Drake Stadium - Record attendance of 4,139 - Meet Results: Collins team achieved strong 3rd placing of 17 points, only one point from second place Midland of Wyoming - 18. Manilla, favored to win the State Title, scored 33 points. Collins freshman Deb Carroll won the 100 yd dash - 11.2 seconds; placed 2nd in the 220 yd dash - 25.6 seconds (News article indicates final outcome was by timing in heat races - Hennesseey and Carroll did not compete in the same finals heat race.); placing 4th in the 60 yd dash (time not listed); and long jump 3rd place of 17.4 1/2 inches on her last jump (Deb's best jump of the year by 6 to 8 inches). The 10 flight shuttle hurdle relay team had strong run,placing4th, 1:07 (team members - Joan Altes, Jodee Holland, Teresa Luing, Diana Atwood). The difficult event of the day for Collins team occurred when Diana Atwood's strong effort in the 220 yd hurdle race caused her to "clip a hurdle" resulting in falling in a race she was capable of potentially winning. Her skinned-up leg also slowed her in the 100 meter hurdle race. Debbie Carroll was also competing with a "knee wrap" on a sprained knee injury caused in long jump competition a week earlier.
