January 15, 1971. Track is mostly an individual sport, and no girl had ever dominated the State Girls Track meet in the fashion that Cathy Carroll, Collins did last May. As a result, Miss Carroll's feat of winning four individual titles at the State Track Meet was voted Nevada Journaland's Top Sports' Story of 1970. She won the long jump, 60, 100, and 220 yard dashes to nearly win Collins the team title on her performances. Her 24 points were just three points less than the total scored by the two teams which tied for first place with 27 points. Other recognitions in the Nevada Journal newspaper area: 2nd place, Roland/Story City Girls State Softball championship; 3rd place undefeated West Marshall undefeated football team, extending their total winning street to 22 consecutive wins; 4th place, NESCO's Royal Kings won their first Iowa River Valley Conference football title with an undefeated season; 5th Gilbert girls basketball team reaching the state tournament "Sweet 16."
January 16, 1971. Basketball: The Collins Clipperettes shot off to a 27-9 1st quarter lead and went on to defeat Colo 69-47. Collins scoring: Deb Carroll 32; Joan Altes 25; Jan Talburt 12.
The Colo boys took 21-15 1st quarter lead and outscored Collins boys each of the remaining 3 quarters for 71-51 victory. Lineup: Steve Carroll 17; Rick McQuiston 10; Dick Huntrods and Stan Carroll, 7 each; Bob Oswalt 4; Jerry Adams 4; Bill Crabb 2. Rebounding: Dick Huntrods 10; Bob Oswalt 8. Collins shooting percentage -- 25%.
January 22, 1971. Basketball: The Collins girls guard court held Mingo without a field goal for the first 7 1/2 minutes of the game as Collins took a 23-3 lead and outscored Mingo in each of the 3 remaining quarters for a 76-47 victory. Cathy Kingman, Nancy Long, and Janice Hunt were the starting guards for Collins who played tremendous defense in holding Mingo scoreless for the 7 1/2 minutes. Scoring: Deb Carroll 28; Joan Altes 23; Jan Talbut 16; Jodee Holland 5; Sandy Barrett and Donna Barrett, 2 each.
The Clippers went into overtime to nip Mingo 66-62 for their 2nd victory of the season. The first victory also over Mingo. Lineup: Bob Oswalt 18; Rick McQuiston 16; Stan and Steve Carroll 9 each; Dick Huntrods 8; Bill Crabb 3; Ed Fitzgerald 2; Bill Huntrods 1. Rebounding: Bob Oswalt 14.
January 25, 1971. Basketball The Collins girls opened the game with 21 point first quarter, however, Maxwell scored 26 points and 24 points in the 2nd quarter with the final score Maxwell 79 and Collins 56. Scoring: Joan Altes 27; Deb Carroll 12; Jan Talburt 9; Jodee Holland 6; Roxanne Newman 2.
