September 9, 1970. Collins fall baseball team will meet Green Mountain in the first round of the sectional tournament at Steamboat Rock on Saturday. Semifinal games are Monday and final game will be played at Pella Christian on Friday, Sept. 18, 3:30 p.m.

September 15, 1970. A sparse turnout with no contest elected Gene Atwood to district #3 with 44 votes and Chester (Toppy) Lillard won district #4 with 43 votes. Marie Morrison was re-elected treasurer with 41 votes.

September 17, 1970. Paul Johnson, Iowa Schools Superintendent, suggested there should be a statewide limit of $640 to $670 per pupil. The Iowa funds would be used to pay for local school costs up to the limit. If a school district unjustifiably exceeds the limit, local property taxes should be used to make up the difference.

September 18, 1970. Lunch menu - Sept. 21-28. Mon. Wiener winks, corn, applesauce, cookie, milk. Tues. Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, fruit, milk. Wed. Pizza, mixed vegetables, jelly sandwich, fruit cup, milk. Thurs. Meat loaf, creamed peas and potatoes, sliced tomato or carrot stick, cake, milk. Fri. Tuna sandwich, over-browned potatoes, lettuce leaf, orange juice, Jell-O, chocolate milk.

September 24, 1970. Marrold Witmer was re-elected as Maxwell board president for the coming year at the annual reorganization meeting held at the school board meeting on Monday night. John Rooney was sworn in for a three-year term on the board. In other business, the board accepted an invitation from the Collins District to visit their school on Wednesday, September 30 for the purpose of seeing their facilities and discussing reorganization possibilities.

September 29, 1970. The Iowa High School Athletic Assoc. is providing, free of charge, "catastrophic" insurance coverage to all high school students engaged in extracurricular activities. Under terms of the blanket contract with the insurance company, parents of student will be liable for the first $5,000 of medical expense, and the Association will pay the remainder, up to $25,000. The policy applies to participating students in grades 9th through 12th in any interscholastic activity supervised by the school and sponsored by the Iowa High School Athletic Assoc., Girls High School Athletic Union, High School Music Association, or High School Speech Association. A student is covered during practice as well as competition; also while being transported.

October 5, 1970. Five Story County schools, Ames, Colo, Collins, Gilbert, and NESCO have exceeded the newly dictated State limitation of $860 per pupil in spending. Taxpayers in these districts will need to take up the tax slack between diminished state aid payment and actual costs. The state will reimburse approximately 40% with state aid funds on local school expenditures up to $860 per child. Anything over this must be paid entirely by local taxes. Collins is not at the limit on the "per pupil" basis, but has budgets that exceed the allowable amount. Spending per pupil--Collins $828, Colo $956, Maxwell $801, NESCO $1,068.

October 16, 1970. Lunch menu -- Oct. 19-23. Mon. Beef burgers, potato chips, green beans, cake, milk. Tues. Soup beans and ham, corn bread, apple salad, cookie, milk. Wed. Spaghetti and meat sauce, lettuce salad, French bread, peaches, milk. Thurs. Ham salad sandwich, potato soup, lettuce leaf, cake, milk. Fri. Beef and noodles, cottage cheese, carrot stick, peaches, chocolate milk.
