May 18, 1970 Iowa Girls State High School Track and Field Championship at the Drake Track Stadium in Des Moines: When Cathy Carroll of Collins had finished "doing her thing" at the Girls State Track Meet at the Drake Stadium, she had accomplished what no other girl had ever done. Also the rules will have to be changed before anyone will ever better her performances. Under present Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union rules, a girl may compete in only four events in any meet. She won all four events she entered for Collins 24 points, 3 points behind co-champions Manila and BGM of Brooklyn. Saturday morning Cathy ran the 100 yd. preliminary in 11.1 seconds, the fastest time. In the 100 yd. finals she matched her preliminary time of 11.1 seconds for the victory and the best time in the state this year. About an hour and a half later, Cathy ran the 220 yd. dash. Pushed to the end, she set a new Collins School record and the best time in the state this year with 25.3, only .3 of second off the state meet record. Later in the afternoon Cathy ran the 60 yd. dash in 7.4 seconds, winning her fourth event of the meet. She went through the entire season undefeated in all three of the sprint races, 60 yd. dash, 100 yd. dash, 220 yd. dash.
(Note: These achievements were done without a home track. Collins School did not have a track. They utilized/improvised the school grounds and the adjoining street for conditioning, training and practice.)
