February 17, 1970 The Collins Community Board of Educationunanimously voted to adopt a $6600 teachers starting salary, $200 increase. Teachers had met for the board on February 2 and asked for a starting salary of $6800 with the addition of health and major medical coverage paid by the school. Jim Wright, Chairman of the Board, said that discussion on fringe benefits for teachers will be taken up at a later date. Presently Collins pays $6400 to beginning teachers and $150 per year guaranteed raise for BA degree holders and $175 per year to MA degree holders.
February 24, 1970 Boys Sectional Tournament at State Center. First Round - Collins and Colo tangled for the third time and continued their encounter into double overtime in a high octane scoring loss for the Collins boys to Colo 78-76. Collins trailed 15-12 at the 1st quarter mark and 37-27 at halftime. Colo had several opportunities to break the game open in the 3rd quarter, but were unable to do so. Both teams struggled in the scoring with the 3rd quarter ending with Collins trailing 47-34. Beginning the 4th quarter Collins started their comeback as Marv Huntrods, Dick Huntrods, and Mark Atwood hit baskets, cutting the lead to 51-44 and a 3-point play by John Hale closed it to 51-47 with four minutes left, prompting two Colo timeouts in less than a minute. Colo scored a point and Collins narrowed the margin to 52-50. A Colo player was whistled for a foul and another got a technical foul on the same play and Marv Huntrods sank the three free throws to put Collins ahead 53-52 with three minutes left. Collins held onto a lead 64-60 with 21 seconds remaining. Colo player scored a basket with 16 seconds left and was fouled on the shot. He missed the free throw and a jump ball was called with 10 seconds remaining. The tip was controlled by Colo who scored the tying basket, 64-64. The first overtime Colo took a 70-66 lead. With only a minute left Bob Oswalt made a field goal and Marv Huntrods tied it with two free throws with 42 seconds remaining in the overtime. In the second overtime, Marv Huntrods and Dick Huntrods scored for 74-70 Collins lead within the first minute, but Colo came back with two buckets within the next 30 seconds. By this time, four Collins and two Colo players had fouled out. Dick Huntrods scored with one minute left, but Colo came back with two free throws for a 76 tie with a minute to go. Colo player scored again with 35 seconds left to win the ballgame. Colo made 27 of 72 field goals and 24 of 41 free throws. Collins made 25 of 58 field goals for 43% and 26 of 39 free throws.
