Property Tax: Story County property tax collections were $10,647,428. $7,071,600 of the property tax was paid out to 13 school districts - Ames, Nevada, Ballard, NESCO, Story City, Gilbert, Colo-Fernald ($246,960), Roland ($200,570), Maxwell ($188,850), Collins ($144,049). Area Schools III and XI received $147,580.
February 7, 1970 Basketball - Collins Homecoming. Collins girls played a nip and tuck game, outscoring Colo 20-9 in the final quarter for a 54-49 victory. Collins trailed 28-20 at halftime and 40-34 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Both teams had 19 field goals with Collins taking 47 shots and Colo 48. Collins hit 16 of 27 free throws with Colo making 11 of 27. Lineup: Cathy Carroll 28 pts.; Joan Altes 12 pts.; Nancy Mullihan 14 pts. Guards: Nancy Long, Kathy Kingman, Janice Hunt, Teresa Luing.
Collins boys and Colo had a tight game for three quarters with Collins trailing 42-37. Collins scoring machine slowed to 14 points in the 4th quarter with Colo hitting 29 points and Colo's victory of 79-51. February 9, 1970 The consensus of 14 area meetings attended by 1200 school board members and superintendents is look for 6.5% Budget Hike. There was strong opinion the rate of annual budget increases in personnel costs over the past three years could not be repeated in light of the general salary levels now prevailing in Iowa compared to neighboring states and the national average. Two major factors that are valid criteria to be taken into account as guidelines for determining the basis of the limits for next years' salary adjustments: the 1969 cost-of-living increase of approximately 6% and the probable 1970 state revenue growth factor of 8%. (The latter affects state aid distribution.) The executive director of the School Board Association said, "Local school boards should seek to develop a pattern reflecting (1) the need to sustain a quality education program, (2) the competitive factors with respect to personnel standards both within and without the field of education, (3) the public concern over the rapid rise in local property tax rates in recent years.
February 10, 1970 Basketball - Collins girls held off Green Mountain for a 51-50 victory. Collins had a 31-28 halftime lead. Cathy Carroll fouled out with 6.30 minutes left in the game and Collins leading by 7 points. Collins scored only five points in the final quarter with Green Mountain scoring 11 for the tense finish of Collins 51-50 victory.
