July 2, 1969 Baseball After nearly blowing the game in the top of the 7th, Collins came back in the bottom of the inning for a 7-6 win over Baxter on the home diamond. Collins was leading 5-2 going into the 7th, but Baxter scored 4 runs for a 6-5 lead. Marv Huntrods doubled to open the Collins 7th and moved to 3rd on a ground out. Jerry Whitaker's squeeze play bunt hit scored Huntrods for the tying run. Whitaker stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored the winning run on a wild pitch. John Hale, Bob Earles, and John Evans each had 2 hits with Evans and Huntrods hitting doubles. Bob Earles pitched: Innings - 7, hits - 6, strikeouts - 9, walks - 11. July 10, 1969 New School Superintendent, W. L. Juhl, has moved to Collins after six years as superintendent at Terril, Iowa. For ten years he was superintendent and Voc Ag teacher at Providence and was at Dana five years previously. Supt. Juhl is a graduate of Iowa State University, was captain of the wrestling team, and did graduate work at the University of Iowa. He is married and has two children. Juhl is experienced in school reorganization negotiations, assisting the merger between Terril and Lake Center.
July 12, 1969 Baseball Collins avenged an earlier 8-1 loss as they defeated the Colo Blue Devils 5-3 on their diamond. First inning, Bob Earles walked, Marv Huntrods singled, Gordon Carver was safe on an error and Earles scored. Three runs crossed in the 2nd after two were out. Bob Earles was safe on an error, Curtis singled, Hale was safe on an error that allowed one run to score and Earles was safe on an error, which allowed two more runs to score. Colo scored one run in the 3rd and rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 7th before a strikeout and ground out ended the game. July 14, 1969 Baseball Collins out hit SEMCO, conference top team, 6-3, but the leaders posted a 5-0 win on the Collins diamond. SEMCO scored one run in the 1st, three in the 3rd and the fifth run in the 5th inning. In the 5th the Clippers had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, but failed to score. July 16, 1969 Sectional Baseball Tournament at Ames: First round - John Hale pitched a one-hitter and Bob Earles drove in the winning runs as Collins defeated Mingo 5-3. The first two Clipper runs came in the 2nd. Marv Huntrods was safe on an error and stole 2nd with one out. Gordon Carver walked and Mingo's catcher had a passed ball, allowing Huntrods to take 3rd and Carver to reach 1st base. The Mingo catcher had another passed ball, allowing Huntrods to score from 3rd. The catcher then threw the ball over the pitchers head, covering home plate, allowing Carver to score. Two runs scoring on two errors by the Mingo team. Mingo scored a lone run in the top of the 3rd. They took the lead in the top of the 5th without the benefit of a hit. The Clippers put together a rally in the bottom of the 5th. Gordon Carver led off with a double, although he was out when he tried to take 3rd on Whitaker's ground ball. Whitaker stole 2nd. Rick McQuiston had his second single of the game, scoring Whitaker from 2nd base. With two out, Bob Earles had the game winning single to right, scoring Oswalt and McQuiston.
