November 14, 1968 School Regulations School patrons at Maxwell, Collins, Roland, and United Community should not be unduly alarmed by the news release from the State Department of Education that their schools are in jeopardy. It is not the first time the State Department of Education has become aggressive and usually very little comes of it. Many of the matters about which they complain are trivial and have to do with rules that are regarded by working educators as pretty foolish. Maxwell superintendent said that the only deficiency he knows of in his school (according to state regulations) is they do not have a full-time librarian. The superintendent tried all summer to hire a qualified librarian without success. The art teacher at Maxwell works as a half-time librarian while the school board is trying to find a full-time for next year. It's about the same situation at Collins where Supt. Reith looked for a librarian unsuccessfully. It is unrealistic for smaller schools to employee full-time people with degrees in library science. The State Department of Education rule, like many, is one that can easily be contested.
There is one big difference in being sanctioned by the State Department of Education this year and in previous years. All they can do to a school is cut off state aid. In prior years this amounted to about 10% of a school's budget and could be ignored. Today's state contribution to the budget is about 40%, which means the rules had better be obeyed, no matter how trivial they might appear.
Basketball 1968-69 Season - Collins girls coach, Bill Brooks, has six returning letter winners. Three forwards - Linda Carroll (69), Cathy Carroll (70), Donna Rumbaugh (69). Three guards - Debbie Long (69), Karmen Kimberley (69), Peggy Mullihan (70). Last year's graduates were Cathy Clemons, Pam Snyder, Kathy Hunt and Teresa Evans. Brooks said, "I think we should show enough improvement to have a winning season."
Collins boys are not as experienced and have a new coach, Garry Hamilton. Three letterman are back; Marvin Huntrods (f) (70), Joe Fitzgerald (g) (69), Gordon Carver (g) (69). Last year's graduates were Mike Mullihan, Tom Morrison, Roger Holland, Steve Holland, and Chuck Page, all starters last year. Coach Hamilton hopes aggressiveness will help make up for their lack of size.
