March 11, 1968 Colo, Collins, Maxwell in School Merger Survey: School consolidations, which swept Story County several years ago may unite Colo, Maxwell, and Collins school systems if a survey indicates its desirability. The decision to have a survey was made Friday at a meeting of representatives of the three schools with Dave Gilliland of the State Department of Public Instruction. The group made a tour of the three school sites and conferred at length with Mr. Gilliland. A team from Drake University or one of the state institutions will make the survey. Falling enrollment and consequent higher costs of operating the three schools is given as the reason for seeking the consolidation; which is in accord with the long-range plans for the county, which envisions eventual two-system for the county divided east to west, according to County Supt. Cliff Metcalf who attended the meeting. Supt. William F. Connell - Colo School; Supt. Ted Reith - Collins School; Supt. W. F. Baddeley - Maxwell School attended along with the board of education members of the three schools. A comparison of tuition rates of the schools in Story County was made. The listing, which shows actual cost per student, indicated the Maxwell High School cost at $1,058 and Colo was $736. The state average cost per high school student is $886. Only Maxwell and Ames (within Story County) have a higher tuition rate than the state average. The Ames cost is $907. Figures collected thus far show that consolidation of the three schools has a total combined enrollment of 1,077 students in all the grades and the total area would be 180 square miles. The assessed valuation is $12,637,320 and current bonded indebtedness is $327,000.
