March 9, 1967 Eighth-Grade Boys Home Ec started a week and a half ago. The first day spice, chocolate, and white cupcakes with frosting were made. The next day the boys were divided into four cooking groups: 1 - Marty Tjelmeland, Brad Kimberley, David Williams, Dwayne Uitermark; 2 - Edward Fitzgerald, Bob Oswalt, Carl Middleton, Dick Huntrods; 3 - Bill Long, Paul Lengeling, Jim Novinger, Bob Raines; 4 - Harold Rumbaugh, Ronnie Beavers, Jerry Adams, Rick McQuiston. Mrs. McCoy, teacher, gave the class a demonstration on how to make pizza and spaghetti. Groups 1 and 3 made spaghetti and groups 2 and 4 made pizza. The food turned out very well. Things learned include how to bake cupcakes, set the table, dress for school, the importance of always washing hands before cooking, wear an apron and a hat in the kitchen. The boys also learned sewing on buttons, how to iron, and make ice cream.
March 16, 1967 School Lunch Program - Iowa Schools are now receiving large shipments of government commodities: Applesauce, butter, dry beans, cheese, dry milk, rolled oats, winter pears, frozen boneless beef roasts, frozen ground beef, frozen cut-up chickens, grapefruit sections, frozen concentrated orange juice, flour, shortening, honey, and limited amounts of corn meal, peanut butter, raisons, and rice. Also needy schools can expect an allocation of chopped meat, chickens, boneless beef, butter, cheese, sweet potatoes, orange juice, canned plums, and dried prunes. A needy school is one that is either serving a large number of free lunches or has a large unmet need for additional free lunches and has applied for special assistance. Government commodities for school lunches allotted so far this year to Iowa are $483,000 more than last year.
April 6, 1967 Hi-Lites Music Program was presented last Saturday evening. This was a high quality music program presented by the school music department under the direction of Mr. Kuhns, music director. High-Lites program included: Marimba Solo by Barb Oswalt; The Robinson trio with "Mairzedoats;" the Saxy playing "Twelfth Street Rag;" The Collins Cowgirls - Meg Kimberley and Darcy Tjelmeland "I am an Old Cowhand;' Solo by Teresa Evans; Dancers Moderne; solo by Bill Hamilton; Girls Sextet "Born Free;" Tune Teasers "Side By Side;" duet "Moon River" by Barb Oswalt and Chris Atwood. (Insert 2010: Incomplete listing of performances. The program concluded with a spotlight on the flag and the mixed chorus sang, "Where in the World," "America Our Heritage," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which was a very impressive presentation. After the program, Mr. Kuhns was presented a gift from the P. T. O., and to his surprise, a birthday cake.
